What is a Unique Visitor? Definition and Difference from Page Views

A unique visitor is one distinct visitor counted once during a reporting period. If the same visitor views ten pages in one day, they may count as one unique visitor and ten page views for that day.

Unique visitors help estimate audience size. Page views show viewing volume, while unique visitors show how many distinct people or browsers generated that volume.

How unique visitors are counted

Analytics tools estimate unique visitors in different ways. Some use cookies. Some use user accounts. Some use privacy-preserving techniques based on limited request information. No method is perfect.

Cookies can improve recognition but create consent and privacy concerns. Account-based tracking works for logged-in products but not anonymous marketing pages. Cookieless analytics can estimate unique visitors while reducing invasive tracking.

Why unique visitors matter

Unique visitors are useful for measuring audience growth, reach, content popularity, campaign size, and product demand. They are especially helpful when page views are inflated by refreshes, repeat browsing, or multi-page sessions.

Swetrix reports unique visitors alongside sessions, page views, referrers, traffic channels, goals, funnels, and custom events so teams can understand both reach and behavior.
