What is a Cookie? Website Cookie Definition for Analytics and Privacy

A cookie is a small piece of data stored in a visitor's browser by a website. Cookies can remember login sessions, preferences, shopping carts, language choices, analytics identifiers, and advertising information.

Cookies are not automatically bad. Many first-party cookies are useful for basic website functionality. The privacy problem usually comes from tracking cookies that identify visitors across sessions, devices, or websites without a clear user benefit.

How cookies work

When a browser visits a website, the server or JavaScript running on the page can ask the browser to store a cookie. On future requests, the browser can send that cookie back to the same domain, depending on cookie settings.

Common cookie fields include:

  • Name and value
  • Domain
  • Path
  • Expiration date
  • Secure flag
  • HttpOnly flag
  • SameSite setting

These settings control where the cookie can be used and how long it lasts.

Cookies in analytics

Traditional analytics tools often use cookies to recognize returning visitors, connect multiple page views into sessions, and attribute conversions. This can improve continuity, but it can also create privacy and consent obligations.

Analytics cookies may require consent in many jurisdictions, especially when they are not strictly necessary or when they support advertising, profiling, or cross-site tracking.

Cookieless analytics

Cookieless analytics measures website behavior without storing analytics cookies in the visitor's browser. A cookieless platform can still track page views, sessions, referrers, traffic sources, devices, countries, events, and conversions while reducing privacy risk.

Swetrix is cookieless by design. It helps teams understand website traffic without relying on invasive identifiers or third-party advertising cookies.
