What is Click-through Rate? CTR Definition, Formula, and Examples

Click-through rate, usually shortened to CTR, is the percentage of people who click on something after seeing it. CTR is used across website analytics, SEO, paid ads, email marketing, product onboarding, and conversion optimization.

You can measure CTR for a search result, ad, email link, call to action button, navigation item, pricing link, notification, or product prompt. It tells you whether the message and placement are compelling enough to earn a click.

Click-through rate formula

The formula is:

CTR = clicks / impressions x 100

If a search result receives 10,000 impressions and 420 clicks, the CTR is 4.2%.

The meaning of CTR depends on what counts as an impression. For ads and search results, an impression usually means the item appeared to a user. For a website CTA, you may define an impression as a page view, visible section, or rendered button.

Where CTR is used

CTR is commonly used to evaluate:

  • Organic search snippets
  • Paid search ads
  • Paid social ads
  • Email campaigns
  • Landing page CTAs
  • Product banners
  • Navigation links
  • Feature announcements

A high CTR is not always enough. If a CTA earns many clicks but few conversions, the destination may not match the promise. If an ad earns cheap clicks but no revenue, the traffic may be low quality.

How to improve CTR

Improve CTR by making the offer clearer, aligning the message with visitor intent, improving the page title or ad copy, placing the CTA near the right decision point, and testing alternatives. For SEO, title tags and meta descriptions can strongly affect CTR from search results.
