What is Conversion Rate Optimization? CRO Definition and Process
Conversion rate optimization, usually shortened to CRO, is the process of improving a website, landing page, product flow, or campaign so more visitors complete a desired action. The action might be a signup, purchase, demo request, download, upgrade, or feature activation.
CRO is not just changing button colors. Good CRO combines analytics, user intent, copywriting, design, performance, experimentation, and technical quality.
How CRO works
A practical CRO process usually follows five steps:
- Identify pages or flows with meaningful traffic and business value.
- Analyze where visitors drop off or fail to act.
- Form a hypothesis about the cause.
- Make a focused change or run an A/B test.
- Measure the effect on conversions and guardrail metrics.
For example, if many visitors reach the pricing page but few start a trial, your hypothesis might be that plan differences are unclear. A test could simplify the pricing table, add a better comparison, or change the call to action.
CRO metrics to track
Useful CRO metrics include:
- Conversion rate
- Click-through rate
- Bounce rate
- Funnel step completion
- Form completion rate
- Revenue per visitor
- Page speed
- JavaScript error rate
Performance and errors matter because a conversion problem is not always a messaging problem. A slow page, broken checkout, or JavaScript error can hurt conversion rate even when the offer is strong.
What CRO is not
CRO is not about tricking visitors into clicking. Short-term tricks can increase clicks while damaging trust, retention, or revenue quality. Better CRO helps visitors understand the offer, reduce uncertainty, and complete the action they already came to consider.
Swetrix supports privacy-friendly CRO by connecting traffic sources, goals, funnels, custom events, performance monitoring, error tracking, and experiments in one place.
